Public Enemy: It Takes A Nation Of Millions… (Part 1 of 3): Beginnings

You would think that getting to see P.E. perform A Nation Of Millions… live, complete with SW1s and Flav, would have been the highlight of my first trip to Chicago. In all likelihood it would have been, but the day before the show the guys at Pitchfork.tv invited me over to the Chicago Public Library for a panel discussion on Millions…

For a good two hours I sat there and listened and laughed and reminisced and learned as Chuck D, Hank and Keith Shocklee and Harry Allan talked about their musical upbringing, Spectrum sound system, youth centers, parties at Adelphi, Rick Rubin, Iron Maiden album covers and how they were about to bring the noise and blow apart hip hop as the world had, at that point, come to know it.

Much like the first time I heard It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, I sat there captivated. I was that 10 year old kid again, in awe, blood flowing, adrenaline rushing, fully aware that at that current moment in time my mind was being completely blown - fully conscious of, and grateful for, the enormous gift I was currently recieving. I’m thankful to Bomb Squad for giving the world such a great musical masterpiece and immensely grateful to David Park for giving me the opportunity to be part of such an awesome event.

Much of that panel discussion, and lots more, are included in this Pitchfork special presentation. You should definitely check it out. (Even if you aren’t a huge sentimental geek about this shit as I am)

Can’t wait for part 2 & 3!
